Transport dominates the late-time dynamics of quantum many-body systems with conserved quantities and is described by the laws of hydrodynamics. Within the framework of a quantum kinetic theory, the authors study the recently experimentally realized mass-imbalanced Fermi-Hubbard model in one dimension and investigate the emergence of diffusive hydrodynamics. Excellent agreement with both tensor network computations and experimental data is found. Furthermore, they analyze the influence of external potentials and show that the presence of a tilt gives rise to a more exotic type of subdiffusive transport.

The authors investigate the low-moment magnetic phases of LaNi using neutron diffraction on single crystals. At intermediate temperatures, there are two incommensurate magnetic phases with the same temperature-dependent propagation vector, but different magnetic-moment directions. At low temperatures, the magnetic structure abruptly becomes a uniaxial commensurate antiferromagnet through a first-order transition. These properties make LaNi an interesting candidate in the search for interesting phenomena such as superconductivity via suppressing weak magnetic order through pressure and/or chemical substitution.

Within topological band theory, stable, fragile, and recently discovered delicate topological insulators are distinguished based on their stability against addition of trivial degrees of freedom. In this manuscript, the authors study delicate topological insulators protected by crystalline symmetries. They demonstrate that sharp boundaries of these insulators possess conducting states, while states localized at nonsharp boundaries are generically insulating but have anomalous symmetry eigenvalues. These boundary signatures are qualitatively unique among the known topological insulators.

When two layers of graphene are stacked at a specific “magic” twist angle, the Dirac cones hybridize, forming perfectly flat bands. Can Dirac cones at the interface between two stacked and twisted 3D topological insulators exhibit similar band flattening? Ultimately, the generalization from Dirac cones in sublattice space to spin space is not so simple. The authors derive here the necessary conditions to flatten the anomalous Dirac cones, which has implications for realizing tunable interacting topological phases.

The ZrSiS-type family of square-net materials Zr with =Si,Ge,Sn and =O,S,Se,Te provide an ideal platform for exploring the exotic physics of the nodal-line semimetal phase. Here, the authors show by polarization-dependent reflectivity measurements that the optical response of the materials ZrGeSe and ZrGeS is highly anisotropic with a reduced metallic character perpendicular to the square-net layers, like in ZrSiS. Under external pressure, two new excitations appear in the out-of-plane optical response of ZrGeSe, confirming the recent findings in ZrSiS.

Is it possible to have a single crystal that hosts a variety of correlated surface states? Layered transition metal dichalcogenides such as bulk 1-TaSe offer a unique platform for accomplishing this since the electrons in each charge density wave (CDW) unit cell are susceptible to both Coulomb repulsion and interlayer coupling. By using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, the authors identify here a multitude of correlated surface states that exist on bulk 1-TaSe with properties ranging all the way from Mott insulating to strongly metallic Kondo behavior. 1-TaSe thus simulates the full range of the periodic Anderson model within a single crystal by combining electron correlations with variable interlayer coupling.
