Ephemeral data derived potentials for random structure search

First-principles structure prediction enables the computational discovery of materials with extreme, or exotic properties. A notable example being the dense hydrides, which, following computational searches, were found to exhibit high-Tc superconductivity. The rapid construction of ephemeral, or disposable, interatomic potentials, dramatically accelerates the exploration of energy landscapes, even accounting for the time to create the potentials. This approach is used to uncover a complex and overlooked phase of dense silane, suggesting that the binary hydrides should be revisited.

Combining the ultralow attenuation of phonon modes with the widely tunable properties of magnetic waves opens an avenue for improving magnon-based applications. In high-resolution experiments and corresponding modeling, the authors find here that the mode overlap between phonon and magnon modes is the key parameter governing the magnon-phonon interaction. Furthermore, they observe a transition from the high cooperativity regime to the weak coupling regime, where the magnon-phonon interaction gives rise to a broadband emission of phonons by the excited magnetization dynamics.

Nonlinear nonreciprocal transport in antiferromagnets free from spin-orbit coupling

Relativistic spin-orbit coupling is a fundamental source of nonlinear nonreciprocal transport. It has been believed that large spin-orbit coupling is necessary to cause nonlinear nonreciprocal transport, which strongly narrows down candidate materials. Here, the authors theoretically propose an alternative mechanism of nonlinear nonreciprocal transport using local spin scalar chirality instead of spin-orbit coupling. They demonstrate two types of nonlinear nonreciprocal transport and clarify their microscopic parameter conditions. The findings significantly promote emergent noncentrosymmetric physics in the magnetic phase.

Revisiting flat band superconductivity: Dependence on minimal quantum metric and band touchings

Flat band systems such as twisted bilayer graphene superconduct thanks to nontrivial band wave functions. The work here relates the superfluid weight and the Cooper pair mass in isolated flat bands to the new concept of minimal quantum metric, solving an underappreciated, yet crucial issue in previous work. Moreover, the authors demonstrate that flat bands do not need to be energetically isolated to maximize the critical temperature, showing that many more materials are candidates for superconductivity at elevated temperatures.
