Interaction-induced spatial correlations in a disordered glass

Sufficiently strong disorder localizes the wave functions of a degenerate Fermi gas. The Coulomb interaction in such a medium renders the system a glass, exhibiting slow relaxation and a rich variety of memory effects. These establish the electron glass as a versatile system for the study of the interplay between disorder and interaction. Here, the author reports on a reversible charge-ordering process in an amorphous electron glass. This occurs while the disorder is considerably stronger than the interaction, which may suggest the relevance of quantum coherent effects.

The authors introduce exactly solvable models of the quantum phase transition, marking the breakdown of the heavy Fermi liquid in heavy-fermion materials. The solutions capture the puzzling non-Fermi liquid transport with linear-in-temperature resistivity, as seen in experiments. Furthermore, they reveal a broad regime in which a “Planckian” strange metal is established, namely the quasiparticle lifetime in this regime is set only by fundamental constants and the temperature. The new large- approach introduced in the paper may be useful for describing a broader class of quantum critical points in systems with strong electronic correlations.

Spin-orbit interaction in a crystal surface typically causes helical spin polarization, namely topological or Rashba states. The authors have noticed that the known cases of such surface spin polarization are limited to ideal models because of the symmetry operations in the surface atomic structure. Here, they reveal numerous hidden surface spin textures in a surface quasi-1D system, which vary from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic depending on the wave vector, with a small number of symmetry operations. This achievement suggests that versatile spin texture at the surface would be tailored by tuning the symmetry operations.

Integer quantum Hall states and their generalization to topological insulators and superconductors are paradigmatic examples of invertible fermionic topological states of matter. Here, the authors develop a comprehensive characterization and classification of invertible fermionic topological phases of matter in two spatial dimensions for general symmetry groups. The results are nonperturbative and apply to strongly interacting systems. In particular, they extend previous classification results to account for the possible chiral nature of invertible phases.
