Multiple ferroic orders and toroidal magnetoelectricity in the chiral magnet BaCoSiO4

Xianghan Xu, Fei-Ting Huang, Alemayehu S. Admasu, Marie Kratochvílová, Ming-Wen Chu, Je-Geun Park, and Sang-Wook Cheong

Phys. Rev. B 105, 184407 (2022) - Published 10 May, 2022

The investigation of ferroic orders and their associated domain structures is essential for understanding the fundamental science of ordering phenomena and engineering the relevant devices. Here, the authors show experimentally that the BaCoSiO4 single crystal carries all four types of ferroic orders - polarization, magnetization, ferrorotation, and toroidal moment. The toroidal moment induces an off-diagonal linear magnetoelectricity, and coupling between magnetization and toroidal moment enables the control of toroidal linear magnetoelectricity with external magnetic fields.

Randomness and frustration in a S=12 square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet

Ellen Fogh, Otto Mustonen, Peter Babkevich, Vamshi M. Katukuri, Helen C. Walker, Lucile Mangin-Thro, Maarit Karppinen, Simon Ward, Bruce Normand, and Henrik M. Rønnow

Phys. Rev. B 105, 184410 (2022) - Published 12 May, 2022

Chemical substitution in Sr2CuTe1xWxO6 introduces a combination of randomness and frustration in the square-lattice Heisenberg quantum antiferromagnet. Neutron scattering is used to probe the ground and excited states of the mixed compounds in this series. It is demonstrated that the random network of interactions is only mildly frustrated. A semiclassical mean-field treatment of the random-bond model, which produces a ground state of small and weakly interlinked ordered patches hosting spin-wave-like excitations, agrees well with the experimental observations.

Superconductivity and quantum oscillations in single crystals of the compensated semimetal CaSb2

M. Oudah, J. Bannies, D. A. Bonn, and M. C. Aronson

Phys. Rev. B 105, 184504 (2022) - Published 3 May, 2022

Identifying new bulk superconductors with topologically nontrivial bands in the normal state is critical for achieving topological superconductivity with Majorana fermions for applications in quantum computing. Here, the authors perform measurements on the nodal-line semimetal CaSb2 using single crystals for the first time, which reveal superconductivity and electron-hole compensation. The Sb atoms form a distorted square net in the crystal structure and contribute strongly to the electron bands at the Fermi level, and connections may be drawn to the well-known square net semimetals. The meeting of superconductivity and topology here should open up the diantimonides as a platform for realizing topological superconductivity.

Chirality of magnetic excitations in ferromagnetic SrRuO3

K. Jenni, S. Kunkemöller, W. Schmidt, P. Steffens, A. A. Nugroho, and M. Braden

Phys. Rev. B 105, L180408 (2022) - Published 16 May, 2022

The quantum mechanics commutation rules of spin components determine the right-handed precession of the magnetic moment in a normal ferromagnet. However, strong spin-orbit coupling can reverse the chirality of the magnetic excitation and the metallic ferromagnet SrRuO3 was proposed as a candidate for such behavior. Here, polarized inelastic neutron scattering directly measures the sign of the chirality, and such experiments on SrRuO3 show that magnons remain right handed in spite of the documented strong relevance of spin-orbit coupling in the ruthenates.

Bulk domain Meissner state in the ferromagnetic superconductor EuFe2(As0.8P0.2)2: Consequence of compromise between ferromagnetism and superconductivity

Coexistence of strong ferromagnetism and bulk superconductivity in the EuFe2As2 (Eu122) family of iron pnictide superconductors has attracted a lot of attention. By performing small-angle neutron scattering measurements on the ferromagnetic superconductor EuFe2(As0.8P0.2)2, the authors confirm that the domain Meissner state observed in a previous surface-sensitive magnetic force microscopy measurement is actually of a bulk nature. It exists only in a narrow temperature and magnetic-field range as an emerging intermediate state, due to the subtle interplay between superconductivity and ferromagnetism. These results are helpful for understanding the mystery regarding the mechanism of coexistence.
