In improper ferroelectrics, polar order emerges as a byproduct of a primary order parameter, such as magnetic ordering or a structural distortion. Therefore, it is believed that improper ferroelectrics react differently to electric field poling compared to usual ferroelectrics . Here, using cryogenic scanning probe microscopy, the authors show for the improper ferroelectric YMnO that, surprisingly, this is not necessarily the case. Improper ferroelectrics can behave similarly to proper ferroelectrics in many ways, while exhibiting intriguing additional functionalities.
