Hyperbolicity in two-dimensional transition metal ditellurides induced by electronic bands nesting

Hongwei Wang and Tony Low

Phys. Rev. B 102, 241104(R) (2020) - Published 4 December, 2020

Naturally occurring in-plane hyperbolic response, where metallic and dielectric response along orthogonal crystal axes coexists, is rarely observed in nature. Here, the authors find that in an anisotropic transition metal dichalcogenide (i.e., the 1T phase of WTe2), a pair of nested bands around its Fermi level provides the conditions for hyperbolicity to occur. The band-nesting induced resonant interband optical transitions, which in conjunction with the strong in-plane anisotropic optical processes, leads to hyperbolic plasmons in the near-infrared spectral regime. The physical principle is general, and the authors demonstrate similar hyperbolic response in other 1T transition metal dichalcogenides by modulating the degree of band nesting through strain engineering.

Efficient lattice dynamics calculations for correlated materials with DFT+DMFT

Can P. Koçer, Kristjan Haule, G. Lucian Pascut, and Bartomeu Monserrat

Phys. Rev. B 102, 245104 (2020) - Published 2 December, 2020

This paper reports a method for the calculation of phonons in correlated materials. The approach combines a DFT+DMFT implementation in order to calculate forces with the direct method for lattice dynamics. Phonons for a number of typical correlated materials are calculated efficiently by using nondiagonal supercells. In addition, a fixed self-energy approximation for lattice dynamics is proposed and shown to lead to excellent results. The work opens up many possibilities for the study of lattice dynamics and associated phenomena in correlated materials.

Parquet renormalization group analysis of weak-coupling instabilities with multiple high-order Van Hove points inside the Brillouin zone

Yu-Ping Lin and Rahul M. Nandkishore

Phys. Rev. B 102, 245122 (2020) - Published 15 December, 2020

The discovery of unconventional superconductivity and correlated insulators in twisted bilayer graphene has triggered enormous interest in modern condensed matter research. Here, the authors investigate the potential weak-coupling instabilities in such a system, particularly at the higher-order Van Hove singularity. An asymptotically exact renormalization group analysis uncovers a host of unconventional correlated phases. These include chiral and helical superconductivities, ferromagnetism, and valley-polarized order with potential rotation symmetry breaking. The results may serve as interesting indications for the experimentally observed correlated phases in twisted bilayer graphene.

Hybridization-induced gapped and gapless states on the surface of magnetic topological insulators

Xiao-Ming Ma et al.

Phys. Rev. B 102, 245136 (2020) - Published 22 December, 2020

The Mn-Bi-Te family of materials hold promise for realizing the quantum anomalous Hall effect, provided that the topological surface states are gapped by magnetic order. However, previous ARPES measurements have revealed gapless surface Dirac cones for all Mn-Bi-Te antiferromagnetic members. Here, combining ARPES, DFT and tight-binding simulations, the authors find out that the gapless surface Dirac cones result from hybridization between surface and bulk states. This hybridization gives the surface states bulk distribution, with much reduced effective magnetic moment, and thus not sensitive to antiferromagnetic order.

Phys. Rev. B 102, 245146 (2020) - Published 28 December, 2020

The heavy-fermion superconductor CeCu2Si2 is investigated with soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy in the temperature range from 250 mK to 250 K and the Jz admixture of the Γ7 ground-state wave function is determined. The overall temperature dependence of the experimental linear dichroism is reproduced well by the thermal occupation of excited crystal-field states so that the scenario of orbital switching seems unlikely. Spectroscopic evidence for the presence of the Ce 4f0 configuration in the ground state is consistent with the possibility of a multiorbital character of the ground state.
