Information scrambling at finite temperature in local quantum systems

Subhayan Sahu and Brian Swingle

Phys. Rev. B 102, 184303 (2020) - Published 5 November, 2020

Quantum information scrambling provides diagnostics about how information spreads when an isolated quantum system evolves in time. Here, the authors study the temperature dependence of scrambling in locally gapped systems. Using tensor networks, they numerically evaluate out-of-time-ordered commutators in a large, strongly interacting spin chain as a function of temperature. They find that scrambling crucially depends on the ordering of operators around the thermal circle, exposing subtleties in information propagation at finite temperature. For a regulated operator ordering, the butterfly velocity decreases with lowering the temperature, as seen in the figure. The low temperature behavior is derived from a field-theoretical analysis.

Phys. Rev. B 102, 184307 (2020) - Published 30 November, 2020

How do electrons relax after optical excitation? When does temperature become a well-defined quantity to describe the system, and what can nonthermal electrons tell us about microscopic interactions? Using state-of-the-art time- and angle-resolved photoemission, the authors track the evolution of nonthermal electrons dynamics in graphite over hundreds of femtoseconds. The Boltzmann formalism is used to model the dynamics beyond the use of effective temperature. Based on a quantitative analysis, distinct nonthermal phases in electron relaxation are identified.

Magnetic topological insulators combine two cornerstones of modern solid-state physics: band topology and electron correlations. To understand this class of materials, methods that address both itinerant and correlated electron properties are necessary. Here, the authors describe a systematic study of Eu-doped Bi2Te3 based on SQUID magnetometry, photoemission, resonant x-ray spectroscopy, and density functional theory. The synergy between these tools provides a comprehensive picture of a system, in which antiferromagnetism and topological surface states coexist, and which holds substantial promise for the realization of exotic states of matter such as the quantum anomalous Hall effect.
