Giant momentum-dependent spin splitting in centrosymmetric low-Z antiferromagnets

Lin-Ding Yuan, Zhi Wang, Jun-Wei Luo, Emmanuel I. Rashba, and Alex Zunger

Phys. Rev. B 102, 014422 (2020) - Published 15 July, 2020

The traditional bulk Rashba effect predicts spin-orbit coupling induced wave-vector-dependent spin splitting between energy bands in nonmagnetic solids that lack spatial inversion symmetry. The authors show here how the violation of magnetic symmetry leads instead to a few prototypes of momentum-dependent spin splitting of energy bands that are induced by antiferromagnetism. This discovery broadens the spintronics playing field to include centrosymmetric compounds, even made of light elements with low spin-orbit coupling. Atomistic density functional calculations show that giant splitting above 200 meV is possible between top two valence bands.

Manifestation of structural Higgs and Goldstone modes in the hexagonal manganites

Quintin N. Meier, Adrien Stucky, Jeremie Teyssier, Sinéad M. Griffin, Dirk van der Marel, and Nicola A. Spaldin

Phys. Rev. B 102, 014102 (2020) - Published 10 July, 2020

Spontaneous breaking of a continuous symmetry described by a Mexican hat potential is relevant in many areas of physics, from magnetism to particle physics. Its effects manifest in the excitation spectrum as the emergence of Higgs and Goldstone modes, which are the amplitude and phase fluctuations of the order parameter. Here, the authors show, using density functional and Landau theories and Raman spectroscopy, that phonons at the crystallographic phase transition in the multiferroic hexagonal manganites provide a manifestation of Higgs and Goldstone excitations.

Enhancement of domain-wall mobility detected by NMR at the angular momentum compensation temperature

Masaki Imai, Hiroyuki Chudo, Mamoru Matsuo, Sadamichi Maekawa, and Eiji Saitoh

Phys. Rev. B 102, 014407 (2020) - Published 6 July, 2020

In a certain kind of ferrimagnets, the net spin angular momentum in the magnet vanishes at a certain temperature, called the angular momentum compensation temperature (TA). The angular momentum compensation is key for high-speed magnetic devices because the magnetization can be swiftly switched due to no inertia of the spin angular momentum accompanied by the magnetic moment. Here, the authors have discovered that the NMR signal is enhanced at TA due to the enhancement of the domain wall mobility. This discovery paves the way to exploring new materials possessing the angular momentum compensation.

Interfacial modulation of spin pumping in YIG/Pt

Lin Liu, Yuehui Li, Yahui Liu, Tao Feng, Jun Xu, X. R. Wang, D. Wu, Peng Gao, and J. Li

Phys. Rev. B 102, 014411 (2020) - Published 8 July, 2020

Interfaces determine spin transfer efficiency of magnetic heterostructures. Here, the authors study spin pumping at the YIG/Pt interface, together with an atomic-scale investigation of interfacial magnetic states. This work singles out the structural, chemical, and magnetic states at the interface and clearly reveals their different roles in spin pumping, especially the critical role of the interfacial magnetic moments on spin mixing conductance at the interface, providing a guide to optimize future spintronics devices.

Entanglement equipartition in critical random spin chains

Xhek Turkeshi, Paola Ruggiero, Vincenzo Alba, and Pasquale Calabrese

Phys. Rev. B 102, 014455 (2020) - Published 30 July, 2020

Quantum many-body systems naturally present intricate entanglement patterns between the extensive number of degrees of freedom. In the presence of symmetry, the entanglement contribution of each symmetry sector gives a powerful lens through which to observe these patterns, both in theory and in experiment. It has been proposed that, in clean systems, an entanglement equipartition generically emerges, meaning that the different sectors contribute equally. This work shows that such equipartition is, not obviously, robust against disorder, at least in the random singlet phase of quantum spin chains. Furthermore, the authors identify the subleading term breaking the equipartition.
