Abstract
High-resolution polarized and unpolarized neutron scattering experiments have been performed in order to characterize the paramagnetic scattering from the γ-phase (fcc) of metallic iron. Assuming that the width Γ of the energy distribution of the paramagnetic scattering varies like , the experimental results are consistent with values of δ between 1 and 1.5. Therefore, for γ-Fe, the q dependence of Γ does not follow the behavior predicted for a ferromagnet (δ≥2) by dynamical scaling. On the other hand, the results demonstrate that the spin-spin correlations in γ-Fe are ferromagnetic in nature, characterized by an inverse correlation length between approximately 0.25 and 1 A. This result is consistent with the conclusions reached in recent neutron scattering experiments which were performed on γ-Fe at higher momentum transfers.

- This conclusion is also consistent with unpolarized neutron measurements performed by us using better resolution ( Δ E = 0.28 meV) and better statistics.
