Abstract

The exchange asymmetry $A$ in elastic electron scattering from clean Fe(110) as a function of temperature $T$ is studied over an energy range from ~3 to ~100 eV. At very low energies the exchange-asymmetry-versus-temperature data can be well fitted to a "bulk" magnetization curve. At higher energies nonmonotonic behavior and even sign reversals of the $A$ -vs- $T$ curves are observed, which apparently bear no relationship to surface or bulk magnetization. The possible influence of the nonlinearity of the exchange asymmetry, of the temperature dependence of multiple scattering, of the thermal lattice expansion, and of the top-layer expansion are discussed.
