Femtosecond electron pulses are increasingly used as e.g. probes of ultrafast dynamics. The information obtained from these experiments currently is limited by the source’s brightness. This study explores the potential of bullseye plasmonic lenses as ultrafast nanoemitters. This design offers many promising qualities, including emission from a flat nanoscale region and tunability of pulse duration and charge via geometric parameters. Such structures could also be utilized in high-brightness rf guns to enable more signal-intensive experiments, such as detailed spatiotemporal mapping of dynamics in heterogeneous systems, or high-fidelity measurements of weakly scattering systems.
