N. Westerberg, C. Maitland, D. Faccio, K. Wilson, P. Öhberg, and E. M. Wright

Phys. Rev. A 94, 023805 (2016) - Published 1 August, 2016

Bell inequalities for quantum optical fields

Marek Żukowski, Marcin Wieśniak, and Wiesław Laskowski

Phys. Rev. A 94, 020102(R) (2016) - Published 1 August, 2016

Bell inequalities are proposed for quantum optical fields in intensity measurements; they overcome the problem of additional assumptions on the local variables of earlier inequalities for intensities, and for stronger fields better detect entanglement.

Self-bound dipolar droplet: A localized matter wave in free space

D. Baillie, R. M. Wilson, R. N. Bisset, and P. B. Blakie

Phys. Rev. A 94, 021602(R) (2016) - Published 11 August, 2016

A liquid droplet is a self-bound phase of matter that holds itself together in the absence of a container. Without a container a gas will normally expand to fill space. A method is proposed to produce a self-bound dilute quantum gaseous dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate.

Instability of bosonic topological edge states in the presence of interactions

Yaakov Lumer, Mikael C. Rechtsman, Yonatan Plotnik, and Mordechai Segev

Phys. Rev. A 94, 021801(R) (2016) - Published 3 August, 2016

Topological protection holds the promise of making quantum systems more robust against decoherence and backscattering. The interaction between particles, so far mostly neglected for bosons, is here modeled by the inclusion of nonlinear effects, such as modulational instability, to show the emergence of an unstable behavior that degrades the protection.

Nonresonant two-photon transitions in length and velocity gauges

U. D. Jentschura

Phys. Rev. A 94, 022117 (2016) - Published 23 August, 2016

Quantum mechanics is in principle gauge invariant, but its interpretation could be gauge dependent. Some properties of the length-velocity gauge transformation are elucidated in this study about a two-photon transition process in atomic hydrogen.

Phys. Rev. A 94, 022313 (2016) - Published 11 August, 2016

Quantum enigma machine: Experimentally demonstrating quantum data locking

Daniel J. Lum, John C. Howell, M. S. Allman, Thomas Gerrits, Varun B. Verma, Sae Woo Nam, Cosmo Lupo, and Seth Lloyd

Phys. Rev. A 94, 022315 (2016) - Published 12 August, 2016

Classical security theory states that a message is safely transmitted if the length of the encryption key equals that of the message itself. Taking advantage of the quantum uncertainty principle, it is experimentally demonstrated how to beat this limit, reducing to an arbitrarily small amount the leak of information.

Weighted difference of g factors of light Li-like and H-like ions for an improved determination of the fine-structure constant

V. A. Yerokhin, E. Berseneva, Z. Harman, I. I. Tupitsyn, and C. H. Keitel

Phys. Rev. A 94, 022502 (2016) - Published 3 August, 2016

A method is proposed for determining the fine-structure constant by comparing the g factors of hydrogenlike and lithiumlike ions. Anticipated improvements in bound-state QED calculations and Penning-trap measurements make the method promising for obtaining a more accurate value of the fine-structure constant.

Light scattering from dense cold atomic media

Bihui Zhu, John Cooper, Jun Ye, and Ana Maria Rey

Phys. Rev. A 94, 023612 (2016) - Published 9 August, 2016

Light shifts in a cold atomic medium are studied using a microscopic coherent dipole model, a random walk model, and a semiclassical model that directly accounts for motional effects. However, even with the motion of the atoms considered, the current models still fall short of explaining the large density-dependent light shifts measured with 88Sr atoms.

Enhanced optical squeezing from a degenerate parametric amplifier via time-delayed coherent feedback

Nikolett Német and Scott Parkins

Phys. Rev. A 94, 023809 (2016) - Published 1 August, 2016

Squeezing levels of a degenerate parametric amplifier could be substantially increased by performing a conceptually simple modification to its operation. The study presents a detailed analysis of the influence of time-delayed feedback, i.e. feeding one of the output fields of the system back to the input channel after a significant delay.

Photon pair generation in multimode optical fibers via intermodal phase matching

Hamed Pourbeyram and Arash Mafi

Phys. Rev. A 94, 023815 (2016) - Published 5 August, 2016

A single optical fiber may support the propagation of several spatial modes. It is shown how one could take advantage of intermodal phase matching to engineer a flexible source of photon pairs, in this manner offering a way to produce multiple wavelength-tunable pure single photons.
