Single-atom thermometer for ultracold gases

Michael Hohmann, Farina Kindermann, Tobias Lausch, Daniel Mayer, Felix Schmidt, and Artur Widera

Phys. Rev. A 93, 043607 (2016) - Published 8 April, 2016

The temperature of an ultracold, thermal Rb cloud is measured with a single Cs atom by comparing the release-recapture measurements of the atom to classical Monte Carlo simulations, which paves the way to use single atoms as nonperturbing probes of local temperatures of quantum gases.

Slow-light-based optical frequency shifter

Qian Li, Yupan Bao, Axel Thuresson, Adam N. Nilsson, Lars Rippe, and Stefan Kröll

Phys. Rev. A 93, 043832 (2016) - Published 19 April, 2016

A new design for an optical frequency shifter combines a tunable filter and slow-light techniques.

Experimental observation of controllable kinetic constraints in a cold atomic gas

M. M. Valado, C. Simonelli, M. D. Hoogerland, I. Lesanovsky, J. P. Garrahan, E. Arimondo, D. Ciampini, and O. Morsch

Phys. Rev. A 93, 040701(R) (2016) - Published 4 April, 2016

Nonequilibrium dynamics with controllable kinetic constraints are experimentally realized with cold interacting Rydberg gases. The blockade and facilitation constraints are shown to lead to strikingly different dynamical evolutions of the Rydberg excitations.

Observation and characterization of cavity Rydberg polaritons

Jia Ningyuan, Alexandros Georgakopoulos, Albert Ryou, Nathan Schine, Ariel Sommer, and Jonathan Simon

Phys. Rev. A 93, 041802(R) (2016) - Published 13 April, 2016

Rydberg polaritons are photonic quasiparticles that interface well with communication channels — as photons would — but can additionally experience strong interactions. This investigation provides an in-depth characterization of this system, including the exploration of dark-polariton physics in the multimode regime.

Robustness of asymmetry and coherence of quantum states

Marco Piani, Marco Cianciaruso, Thomas R. Bromley, Carmine Napoli, Nathaniel Johnston, and Gerardo Adesso

Phys. Rev. A 93, 042107 (2016) - Published 12 April, 2016

A general framework to witness and quantify the asymmetry of quantum states is developed. The concept is proven to be relevant for different applications, especially to the study of quantum coherence.

Devising local protocols for multipartite quantum measurements

Scott M. Cohen

Phys. Rev. A 93, 042334 (2016) - Published 22 April, 2016

A general method is devised to determine if any given measurement can be implemented by “local operations and classical communication” (LOCC) alone, leading to fundamental results in quantum measurement theory. The procedure proves the impossibility of a measurement by LOCC even when an infinite number of rounds of communication are allowed.

Slalom in complex time: Emergence of low-energy structures in tunnel ionization via complex-time contours

Emilio Pisanty and Misha Ivanov

Phys. Rev. A 93, 043408 (2016) - Published 12 April, 2016

A first-principles, semiclassical theory is formulated in a complex space-time plane to investigate the quantum nature of electron motion in the strong-field ionization of atoms. This theory identifies a series of trajectories responsible for the zero- and low-energy structures in photoelectron spectra that has not been explained by the strong-field approximation.

Rotating-frame perspective on high-order-harmonic generation of circularly polarized light

Daniel M. Reich and Lars Bojer Madsen

Phys. Rev. A 93, 043411 (2016) - Published 14 April, 2016

Generation of circularly polarized high-order-harmonic light fields is studied in a rotating frame, where a simple picture is provided for optimizing the outputs of the harmonics and for simulating strong-field dynamics in the presence of a static electric or magnetic field.

Nondestructive probing of means, variances, and correlations of ultracold-atomic-system densities via qubit impurities

T. J. Elliott and T. H. Johnson

Phys. Rev. A 93, 043612 (2016) - Published 11 April, 2016

A method of probing densities of ultracold bosons confined in a one-dimensional lattice is proposed by employing measurements on the dephasing of qubits formed from impurity atoms, which may be further applied to detecting phase transitions in the Bose-Hubbard model.

Discrete photon statistics from continuous microwave measurements

Stéphane Virally, Jean Olivier Simoneau, Christian Lupien, and Bertrand Reulet

Phys. Rev. A 93, 043813 (2016) - Published 8 April, 2016

Moments of the photocount statistics are retrieved from measurements of field quadratures. The method makes use of cumulants to determine statistical properties of quantum-level microwave signals embedded in strong experimental noise.

Frequency-comb formation in doubly resonant second-harmonic generation

F. Leo, T. Hansson, I. Ricciardi, M. De Rosa, S. Coen, S. Wabnitz, and M. Erkintalo

Phys. Rev. A 93, 043831 (2016) - Published 18 April, 2016

The study presents a theoretical modeling to examine the full temporal and spectral dynamics of intracavity second-harmonic generation, with special attention to the role of temporal walk-off and the generation of frequency combs. The investigation provides physical insight into the nonlinear behavior of the system, being particularly relevant to new developments based on integrated microresonators.

Precision optical displacement measurements using biphotons

Kevin Lyons, Shengshi Pang, Paul G. Kwiat, and Andrew N. Jordan

Phys. Rev. A 93, 043841 (2016) - Published 22 April, 2016

Due to the existence of quantum correlations between photon pairs, their average position can be determined more precisely than the individual position of each photon. This effect is exploited to enhance the precision and the resolution of measuring optical displacements.

Schemes for generation of isolated attosecond pulses of pure circular polarization

C. Hernández-García, C. G. Durfee, D. D. Hickstein, T. Popmintchev, A. Meier, M. M. Murnane, H. C. Kapteyn, I. J. Sola, A. Jaron-Becker, and A. Becker

Phys. Rev. A 93, 043855 (2016) - Published 28 April, 2016

Recently, different proposals for generating isolated attosecond pulses with elliptical polarization have emerged. In this comprehensive study, two schemes based on the noncollinear interaction of two counter-rotating circularly polarized lasers beams are analyzed, showing a mechanism to produce isolated pulses of pure circular polarization.
