Thermal states of random quantum many-body systems

Yoshifumi Nakata and Tobias J. Osborne

Phys. Rev. A 90, 050304(R) (2014) - Published 20 November, 2014

A distribution of thermal states given by random Hamiltonians with a local structure is studied and it is shown that the ensemble of these states monotonically approaches the unitarily invariant ensemble with decreasing temperature if all particles interact according to a single random interaction and achieves a state t-design at a temperature O(1/ log(t)).

Determination of small level splittings in highly charged ions via angle-resolved measurements of characteristic x rays

Z. W. Wu, N. M. Kabachnik, A. Surzhykov, C. Z. Dong, and S. Fritzsche

Phys. Rev. A 90, 052515 (2014) - Published 18 November, 2014

It is shown that small energy-level splittings of resonance states in highly charged ions can be extracted from the angular correlations of characteristic x rays emitted in radiative cascades, which may ultimately be used for new tests of QED in highly charged ions.

Relativistic effects in photoionization time delay near the Cooper minimum of noble-gas atoms

Soumyajit Saha, Ankur Mandal, Jobin Jose, Hari R. Varma, P. C. Deshmukh, A. S. Kheifets, V. K. Dolmatov, and S. T. Manson

Phys. Rev. A 90, 053406 (2014) - Published 6 November, 2014

The time delay of photoemission from noble-gas atoms is analyzed in the vicinity of a Cooper minimum, showing that the presence of the Cooper minimum in one channel has a strong effect on the time delay in other channels.

Dynamics of the effective mass and the anomalous velocity in two-dimensional lattices

Y. Fang, Federico Duque-Gomez, and J. E. Sipe

Phys. Rev. A 90, 053407 (2014) - Published 6 November, 2014

The dynamics of wave packets in periodic potentials and subject to a sudden external force is studied, and it is shown that the usual semiclassical description in terms of effective mass and anomalous velocity requires corrections in such a case.

Ab initio non-Born-Oppenheimer simulations of rescattering dissociation of H2 in strong infrared laser fields

Zhi-Chao Li and Feng He

Phys. Rev. A 90, 053423 (2014) - Published 20 November, 2014

The rescattering dissociation of H2 in strong laser fields by ab initio non-Born-Oppenheimer quantum simulations is demonstrated for the first time which will open the door to further studying the electron localization in the rescattering dissociation, charge-resonance-enhanced ionization with moving nuclei as well as other ultrafast dynamics in small molecules.

Thermally activated local collapse of a flattened dipolar condensate

E. B. Linscott and P. B. Blakie

Phys. Rev. A 90, 053605 (2014) - Published 6 November, 2014

An analytical model that quantifies the energy barrier to local collapse of a flattened dipolar condensate is developed, and a stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii theory is used to perform finite-temperature simulations verifying the local collapse scenario.

Motion-induced signal revival in pulsed Rydberg four-wave mixing beyond the frozen-gas limit

B. Huber, A. Kölle, and T. Pfau

Phys. Rev. A 90, 053806 (2014) - Published 3 November, 2014

Time-resolved signals from a pulsed four-wave mixing process via a Rydberg state on the nanosecond timescale has been observed in rubidium vapor in a regime where the atoms’ evolution depends on the velocity as the Doppler effect has a significant influence on the temporal evolution.
