Thermodynamics of quantum measurement and Maxwell's demon's arrow of time

Kagan Yanik, Bibek Bhandari, Sreenath K. Manikandan, and Andrew N. Jordan

Phys. Rev. A 106, 042221 (2022) - Published 27 October, 2022

In a single-qubit weak-measurement-based device, one may imagine feedback control as conducted by a quantum Maxwell’s demon. Here, the authors investigate both discrete and continuous measurements in such a device in order to connect work and entropy statistics to the demon’s perceived arrow of time.

General time-dependent configuration-interaction singles. I. Molecular case

Stefanos Carlström, Michael Spanner, and Serguei Patchkovskii

Phys. Rev. A 106, 043104 (2022) - Published 10 October, 2022

The authors develop a grid-based implementation of the time-dependent configuration-interaction singles method suitable for computing the strong-field ionization of small gas-phase molecules. This method is then demonstrated in calculations of strong-field ionization of He, LiH, H2O, and C2H4.

Local phase shift due to interactions in an atom interferometer

Zhibin Yao, Cyrille Solaro, Corentin Carrez, Pierre Cladé, and Saïda Guellati-Khelifa

Phys. Rev. A 106, 043312 (2022) - Published 14 October, 2022

The authors study the local phase shift induced by interactions in a light pulse atom interferometer with a Bose-Einstein condensate using a method based on the Feynman path integral. These effects are crucial for the sensitivity and accuracy of the atom interferometers. The theoretical results are verified by experimental measurements without adjustable parameters.

Observation of low-field Feshbach resonances between Dy161 and K40

Zhu-Xiong Ye, Alberto Canali, Elisa Soave, Marian Kreyer, Yaakov Yudkin, Cornelis Ravensbergen, Emil Kirilov, and Rudolf Grimm

Phys. Rev. A 106, 043314 (2022) - Published 17 October, 2022

The authors report the observation of Feshbach resonances in the Fermi-Fermi mixture of ultracold 161Dy and 40K. The authors show experimental evidence that Dy-K offers a Feshbach resonance at 7.29 G with properties that could make the study of resonantly interacting mass-imbalanced Fermi-Fermi mixtures possible. In addition, they demonstrate the formation of DyK Feshbach molecules.

Certifying beyond quantumness of locally quantum no-signaling theories through a quantum-input Bell test

Edwin Peter Lobo, Sahil Gopalkrishna Naik, Samrat Sen, Ram Krishna Patra, Manik Banik, and Mir Alimuddin

Phys. Rev. A 106, L040201 (2022) - Published 12 October, 2022

The authors study the correlations observed in quantum input Bell tests obtained from locally quantum no-signaling theories, which can reveal post-quantumness of bipartite “beyond-quantum” (i.e., more general than quantum) states that is undetectable with the standard classical input Bell tests. The study suggests the requirement of additional information principles to isolate the set of physical correlations.

Fractionality and PT symmetry in a square lattice

Mario I. Molina

Phys. Rev. A 106, L040202 (2022) - Published 14 October, 2022

While a two-dimensional PT-symmetric lattice is always unstable, the author shows that the addition of fractionality can open a stability window.

Quantum information science

Performance evaluation of invariant-based inverse engineering by quantum speed limits

Takuya Hatomura

Phys. Rev. A 106, L040401 (2022) - Published 20 October, 2022

The author studies performance of approximate invariant-based inverse engineering and finds a lower bound which corresponds to the worst case performance of it.

Certification of incompatible measurements using quantum steering

Shubhayan Sarkar, Debashis Saha, and Remigiusz Augusiak

Phys. Rev. A 106, L040402 (2022) - Published 21 October, 2022

The authors propose a simple one-sided device-independent scheme for certification of any set of genuinely incompatible projective measurements, including mutually unbiased bases, and the maximally entangled state of two qudits.

Light-induced processes in atomic-scale systems

Number-resolved detection of dark ions in Coulomb crystals

Fabian Schmid, Johannes Weitenberg, Jorge Moreno, Theodor W. Hänsch, Thomas Udem, and Akira Ozawa

Phys. Rev. A 106, L041101 (2022) - Published 4 October, 2022

Trapped ions without a suitable transition for laser cooling can be sympathetically cooled by embedding them in a Coulomb crystal of laser-cooled ions of another species. The authors demonstrate a method for identifying and counting such embedded ions in real time, which can be used for precision spectroscopy and for the study of ion-neutral chemical reactions.

Ultracold systems and matter waves

Collisional losses of ultracold molecules due to intermediate complex formation

Krzysztof Jachymski, Marcin Gronowski, and Michał Tomza

Phys. Rev. A 106, L041301 (2022) - Published 20 October, 2022

The authors study the structure of four-atom complexes which can be formed in collisions of ultracold molecules, demonstrating that couplings between internal states can be large enough to increase their lifetime beyond semiclassical estimates. They consider the interplay between the complex lifetime, photon absorption rate from the trapping laser, and secondary inelastic collisions with the remaining molecules and show that it can lead to vastly different scenarios of the loss dynamics.

Route toward classical frustration and band flattening via optical lattice distortion

Pil Saugmann, José Vargas, Yann Kiefer, Max Hachman, Raphael Eichberger, Andreas Hemmerich, and Jonas Larson

Phys. Rev. A 106, L041302 (2022) - Published 27 October, 2022

The authors suggest a method to emulate classically frustrated models in systems of ultracold atoms loaded in an optical lattice. The proposal is studied both experimentally and with numerical simulations.

Twisting an optomechanical cavity

Daigo Oue and Mamoru Matsuo

Phys. Rev. A 106, L041501 (2022) - Published 20 October, 2022

Schwinger’s angular momenta may be hidden in a nonrotating system. The authors reveal a way to convert it to mechanical angular momenta in an optomechanical cavity with birefringence which breaks rotational symmetry and induces the angular momentum transfer.

Quantum optics

Dynamics of multiphoton scattering in a two-level mixer

A. V. Vasenin, A. Yu. Dmitriev, S. V. Kadyrmetov, A. N. Bolgar, and O. V. Astafiev

Phys. Rev. A 106, L041701 (2022) - Published 21 October, 2022

Mixing of coherent pulses with different carrier frequencies by a two-level atom results in a finite number of sidebands in the emitted spectrum. The authors studied the dynamics of mixing side components in response to characteristics of the coherent pulses such as their number, amplitudes, durations, and overlapping.
