T. Albahri et al. (The Muon g2 Collaboration)

Phys. Rev. A 103, 042208 (2021) - Published 7 April, 2021

Measurements of the muon magnetic moment strengthen a previously reported tension with theoretical predictions, ushering in a new era of precision tests of the standard model.

Time-traveling billiard-ball clocks: A quantum model

Lachlan G. Bishop, Fabio Costa, and Timothy C. Ralph

Phys. Rev. A 103, 042223 (2021) - Published 28 April, 2021

Closed timelike curves, along which an object can travel to its past, are interesting because they are predicted by general relativity and yet need to be reconciled with quantum mechanics. The authors consider a quantum model of a paradox where a billiard ball can travel along two trajectories: one unperturbed and the other where it can collide with its past.

Nonclassicality of bright Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger–like radiation of an optical parametric source

Konrad Schlichtholz, Bianka Woloncewicz, and Marek Żukowski

Phys. Rev. A 103, 042226 (2021) - Published 30 April, 2021

The authors study the generation of nonclassical light using an optical parametric source by developing a detailed higher-order theory for the bright emissions of triples of Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger photons. The results could potentially be useful for estimating the influence of the higher-order emissions on certain quantum informational protocols.

Quantum-classical algorithms for skewed linear systems with an optimized Hadamard test

Bujiao Wu, Maharshi Ray, Liming Zhao, Xiaoming Sun, and Patrick Rebentrost

Phys. Rev. A 103, 042422 (2021) - Published 23 April, 2021

The authors propose two hybrid quantum-classical algorithms for finding approximate solutions to heavily skewed systems of linear equations for overdetermined and underdetermined cases. The algorithms, which have polylogarithmic dependence on the larger dimension and polynomial dependence in other natural quantities, could potentially be used on noisy intermediate scaled quantum devices.

Phys. Rev. A 103, 042426 (2021) - Published 28 April, 2021

The authors apply dynamical resource theories to interferometers and introduce families of resource measures which allow them to give operational meaning to both the ability to detect and to create coherence.

Recycling qubits in near-term quantum computers

Galit Anikeeva, Isaac H. Kim, and Patrick Hayden

Phys. Rev. A 103, 042613 (2021) - Published 29 April, 2021

The authors propose a protocol that can unitarily reset or recycle qubits when the circuit has a common convolutional form. This protocol could potentially dramatically reduce the spatial cost for implementing the contraction algorithm on general near-term quantum computers.

Coulomb-explosion imaging of carbon monoxide dimers

A. Méry, V. Kumar, X. Fléchard, B. Gervais, S. Guillous, M. Lalande, J. Rangama, W. Wolff, and A. Cassimi

Phys. Rev. A 103, 042813 (2021) - Published 19 April, 2021

The authors use a COLTRIMS setup and Coulomb-explosion imaging to deduce the structure of (CO)2 from two- and three-body dissociation induced by collisions with highly charged argon ions. The structure of the dimer is found to be very diffuse and to be compatible with a purely random orientation of each CO molecule in the dimer. The mean intermolecular distance is found to correspond to the predicted true ground state of the CO dimer with a planar C-bonded geometry.

Strong-field ionization of water: Nuclear dynamics revealed by varying the pulse duration

A. J. Howard, C. Cheng, R. Forbes, G. A. McCracken, W. H. Mills, V. Makhija, M. Spanner, T. Weinacht, and P. H. Bucksbaum

Phys. Rev. A 103, 043120 (2021) - Published 27 April, 2021

The authors report on measurements of the three-dimensional momentum distribution of fragment ions that follow the strong-field double ionization and subsequent dissociation of water using 800-nm laser pulses with durations of 10 and 40 fs. While the short-pulse measurements are found to agree with a simple tunnel ionization picture, the long-pulse measurements cannot be explained by this same picture and suggest substantial nuclear motion within the molecule during the laser pulse.

Magic conditions for multiple rotational states of bialkali molecules in optical lattices

Q. Guan, Simon L. Cornish, and S. Kotochigova

Phys. Rev. A 103, 043311 (2021) - Published 7 April, 2021

The authors present detailed calculations of the dynamic polarizability of low-lying rotational states in bialkali molecules focusing on ultracold RbCs. Simultaneous magic-wavelength trapping of multiple rotational states is shown to be possible for laser frequencies between two nearest-neighbor vibrational poles. Analytical criteria for the magic condition are derived.

Enhanced sensitivity to ultralight bosonic dark matter in the spectra of the linear radical SrOH

Ivan Kozyryev, Zack Lasner, and John M. Doyle

Phys. Rev. A 103, 043313 (2021) - Published 8 April, 2021

Time variations of the proton-to-electron mass ratio are signatures of ultralight dark matter particles coupling to ordinary matter. The authors propose to use laser-cooled SrOH molecules to search for such signals to exquisite precision.

Theory of nanoparticle cooling by elliptic coherent scattering

Henning Rudolph, Jonas Schäfer, Benjamin A. Stickler, and Klaus Hornberger

Phys. Rev. A 103, 043514 (2021) - Published 23 April, 2021

The authors present the theoretical framework of elliptic coherent scattering cooling for aspherical nanoparticles. These theoretical tools could potentially enable simultaneous cooling of the rotational and translational motions of nanoscale dielectrics into the quantum regime.

Single collective excitation of an atomic array trapped along a waveguide: A study of cooperative emission for different atomic chain configurations

V. A. Pivovarov, L. V. Gerasimov, J. Berroir, T. Ray, J. Laurat, A. Urvoy, and D. V. Kupriyanov

Phys. Rev. A 103, 043716 (2021) - Published 21 April, 2021

The authors study theoretically a linear array of atoms with only a segment excited to a super-radiant mode of a 1D waveguide system. Under different atomic geometries, the authors find the system can store, redirect, or behave as an atomic resonator for the light, which could be useful for quantum information processing

Controlling the degree of rotational directionality in laser-induced molecular dynamics

Alexander A. Milner and Valery Milner

Phys. Rev. A 103, L041103 (2021) - Published 29 April, 2021

The authors demonstrate experimentally a method of varying the degree of directionality continuously in a laser-induced molecular rotation by changing the polarization ellipticity of the laser fields. This work adds another toolset for controlling molecular rotation, specifically with optical centrifuges.

The authors study theoretically a linear array of atoms with only a segment excited to a super-radiant mode of a 1D waveguide system. Under different atomic geometries, the authors find the system can store, redirect, or behave as an atomic resonator for the light, which could be useful for quantum information processing
