On the Treatment of Quantum Electrodynamics without Eliminating the Longitudinal Field

Abstract
It is shown in the present paper that the supplementary condition in quantum electrodynamics can be satisfied identically without eliminating the longitudinal components of the electromagnetic field, provided certain rules on the summation over the polarizations of the photons are observed. The result is shown to be identical with that obtained by the usual method in which the longitudinal field is eliminated. This simplifies greatly the calculation since no separate treatment of longitudinal and transverse fields is needed.
