Abstract

A generalized process of the λ-limiting type is established, leading to the elimination of the divergences in the integrals of both the classical and quantum field theories. As a result, however, the process is not unique, and by a suitable choice of the convergence factor the observable quantities, such as the proper mass, may be given any finite value. This indicates either that limiting processes are not capable of solving the basic difficulties in the theory of fundamental particles, or that the necessity for additional postulates of the nature of selection rules.
