Abstract

The spectrum of krypton furnishes a very fine example of the effect of configuration interaction. The levels $3 s_{5}$ and $4 d_{2}$ , belonging to configurations of the same parity are less than 1 ${cm}^{- 1}$ apart, and the Zeeman patterns of lines arising from them show large perturbations, both as regards positions and relative intensities of the components. A semiempirical theory is discussed which leads to excellent agreement with experiment.
