Laser-Beam Interactions 2001 Conference Edition

The 21st ICFA Beam Dynamics Workshop on Laser-Beam Interactions was held at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, USA from June 11 to June 15, 2001. It took place under the joint auspices of ICFA (the International Committee on Future Accelerators) and the Stony Brook Physics Department. The workshop addressed the most recent results and future possibilities in the following topics:

  • High quality electron beams
  • High quality, high power laser beams
  • Ultra-fast X-ray microscopy and pump-probe experiments
  • Laser induced radiation from electron beams: Thomson scattering, seeded Free Electron Lasers, harmonic generation
  • Generation and application of femtosecond X-ray beams
  • Generation of polarized gamma rays and polarized positrons
  • Gamma-gamma colliders
  • Laser cooling of accelerator beams
  • Beam diagnosis
  • Control, manipulation, and microbunching of electron beams by lasers
  • Laser acceleration
  • High field science

Physical Review Special Topics – Accelerators and Beams (PRST-AB) is publishing a conference edition for the 21st ICFA Beam Dynamics Workshop on Laser-Beam Interactions (http://nslserver.physics.sunysb.edu/icfa/Home.htm) that will be held June 11-15, 2001 at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, Long Island, USA. Dr. Igor Pogorelsky of Brookhaven National Laboratory, also a chair of the workshop Program Committee, will act as the special editor of this edition.

PRST-AB is an all-electronic journal published by the American Physical Society. The all-electronic nature of the journal allows "conference editions" while maintaining thorough peer review and timely publication. In addition, it provides global access and archiving beyond that ordinarily offered by conference proceedings.

Workshop Papers: The PRST-AB template available through links on the PRST-AB home page is the required format for submissions. A complete collection of papers presented at the workshop will be put on CD-ROM without review or editing and will be distributed to all participants shortly after the workshop. In addition, an online copy will be posted on the workshop WWW site.

The Program Committee will screen papers and notify authors within two weeks of the end of the workshop whether their paper is recommended for submission to PRST-AB. The PRST-AB criteria, discussed below, will be used for selection. Authors should then submit to PRST-AB using the procedure found through links on the PRST-AB home page. Papers will be peer-reviewed through the normal refereeing procedure, and if accepted for publication they will be published as regular PRST-AB articles and as part of the Laser-Beam Interactions 2001 Conference Edition.

Publication will be timely; articles will be published as soon as they are ready with no delay waiting for other papers presented at the conference. In addition, the Laser-Beam Interactions 2001 Table of Contents and the Workshop WWW site will be updated each time a paper is published.

PRST-AB Criteria: Papers must contain important new results in science and/or technology. Confirmation of previously published results of unusual importance can be considered as new, as can significant null results. In general, authors should keep review material to a minimum. Even so, some review and reprise of past work is appropriate if the paper can be made more understandable and self-contained thereby. Papers cannot be duplicates of work submitted for publication to another journal. Material previously published, or submitted for publication, in a Letters journal or in conference proceedings can be the basis of an article in PRST-AB provided the submitted manuscript presents more information, enabling the reader to obtain an improved understanding of the subject.

There are many important reasons why you should consider publishing in the Laser-Beam Interactions 2001 Conference Edition.

  1. PRST-AB is a peer reviewed, American Physical Society journal. Peer reviewed articles benefit from careful reading and criticism of a knowledgeable colleague.
  2. PRST-AB is available to everyone without subscription or pay per view fees, and PRST-AB is an archival journal. The APS is committed to maintaining that availability even as computer technology and software change.
  3. PRST-AB has no page limits, so this is the opportunity to expand upon your work without that limitation.
  4. Your article will be published in a timely manner and grouped together with other work presented at the 21st ICFA Beam Dynamics Workshop on Laser-Beam Interactions.
