Note on the Parities of the 7.97- to 8.197-MeV States in O17 and the C13(α,n)O16 Reaction as a Source of Polarized Neutrons

Abstract

We have measured the angular distributions of the neutron polarization for the C13(α,n) reaction at Eα=2.075,2.25, and 2.43 MeV to determine Jπ assignments for states in O17 at 7.97, 8.07, and 8.197 MeV. Our analysis of σ(θ) and P(θ) data shows that the parity assignments reported by Schölermann for these states are ambiguous due to the spin and parity structure of the C13(α,n)O16 reaction. The usefulness of this reaction as a source of polarized neutrons is also discussed briefly.
