Energy level measurements in Gd158: An investigation of a possible neutrino balance

Abstract

The decay of Tb158 may be a sensitive neutrino balance which could yield the electron neutrino’s mass to within a few eV. The determination of the neutrino’s mass will require a knowledge of the energy levels in Gd158 and so we present new high precision measurements of the energies of the γ rays from the deexcitation of these levels. They are 780.166±0.007, 897.620±0.055, 944.181±0.009, 962.125±0.009, 977.070±0.170, 1107.635±0.009, and 1187.147±0.007. We also discuss the use of this neutrino balance and we review the current literature regarding the decay of Tb158.
