High-spin states in Ti44 and Sc44

Abstract

We have investigated high-spin states in Ti44 and Sc44 with the Si28(F19, p2nγ)Ti44 and Si28(F19, 2pnγ)Sc44 reactions at 45-55 MeV. Angular distribution, linear polarization, and γγ coincidence data on the emitted γ rays allowed us to construct decay schemes for states in Ti44 and Sc44, and to suggest likely spin and parity assignments for most of these states. In each case, positive parity levels with spins up to the maximum value permitted within a (f72)4 shell-model space were populated. Results of lifetime measurements for several of these states are given, and a comparison is presented of the level energies and some transition strengths to the predictions of shell-model calculations.

NUCLEAR REACTIONS Si28(F19, p2nγγ), E=4555 MeV, Si28(F19, p2nγγ), E=4545 MeV; measured γγ coin.; deduced levels in Ti44, Sc44; measured σ(Eγ,Θ) and Pγ; deduced Jπ for high-spin levels; measured recoil distance; deduced T12, B(E2), effective charges. Natural targets, Ge(Li) detectors.
