An attempt was made to observe the reaction $\gamma \to {\mu }^{\pm }+e^{\mp }$ up to 23 Mev above threshold. It was found that the cross section for this reaction is less than ${10}^{-31\mathrm{}}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^2$ per proton. We have also looked for the decay ${\mu }^{\pm }\to e^{\pm }+\gamma$, and we find that its lifetime is longer than ${10}^{-3\mathrm{}}$ second.
