Absolute Sensitivity of a Graphite Ionization Chamber

Abstract
A thick-walled graphite ionization chamber is suggested as a simple instrument for measuring the total intensity in the x-ray beam emitted by the betraton. The chamber would consist of two layers of carbon, each about 1/5 of a radiation length, or 4.5 cm thick, separated by a thin gas layer whose width is not critical. The transverse dimensions of the carbon layers should be sufficiently large to cover completely the x-ray beam as well as to catch the electrons produced at an angle in the carbon. The absolute sensitivity of the ionization chamber is computed to an accuracy of about 5 percent by comparison with the ionization which would be produced in an infinitely thick carbon block.
