The True Height of an Ionospheric Layer

Abstract

A simple method has been developed for the analysis of ionospheric sweep-frequency records in terms of the scale height and true height of maximum of the layer of Chapman form which most closely fits the observed data. It is shown that the height of maximum determined by the method of Appleton, Booker, and Seaton is the height of a parabolic layer which is not coincident with the parabola that most closely fits the Chapman distribution. The present method includes a correction for retardation in one or more layers of similar form which lie below the reflecting layer.
