The Spectra of the Rare Gases and their Zeeman Effects

Abstract
The Zeeman effect of the rare gases is discussed from the standpoint of the coupling scheme of Shortley and Fried. The matrices for this type of interaction are calculated and also the factors from the transformations to coupling for the configurations. These enable us to determine the Paschen-Back patterns to be expected. The calculated patterns are compared with observed structures and the agreement is very satisfactory in most cases.
