Abstract

The charge of radium E $β - p a r t i c l e s$ was measured by first measuring the charge carried per second by a magnetically analyzed beam and then, after the beam had been reduced by a known fraction by the decay of the source, by counting the number of particles per second in the beam. The average value obtained was - ${4.80}_{0}$ ± ${0.03}_{5}$ × $10^{- 10}$ e.s.u. in agreement with the accepted value of the charge of the electron. Also a half-life of ${4.99}_{0}$ days for radium E was observed. No dependence of either the charge or the half-life upon $H_{ρ}$ was detected.
