The Vibration-Rotation Spectrum of GeH4

Abstract

Two of the infra-red bands of SiH4, originally measured by Steward and Nielsen, have been remeasured at much increased resolving power. In addition a new band near 13.0μ has been located and measured. The bands have been identified as follows: their centers having been determined to be ν2=930.9 cm1, ν3=2113.6 cm1, and ν4=819.3 cm1. From a rotational analysis of these bands the equilibrium value of B and the values of B for the vibration states ν2, ν3, and ν4 have been determined, B being h8π2Ic. These have, respectively, the values B0=2.90 cm1, B=2.87 cm1, B(ν2)=2.96 cm1, B(ν4)=2.79 cm1. The values of ζ are found to be the following; ζ4=12ζ3=0.476. From the above data four independent relations existing between the generalized valence force constant are computed.
