Polarization of Lyman-Alpha Radiation from - and -Rare-Gas Charge-Transfer Collisions

Abstract
An experimental determination of the polarization of Lyman- radiation arising from charge-transfer collisions involving energetic protons and deuterons incident on rare-gas atoms has been made in an energy range from 0.5 to 15 keV proton energy. The polarization was computed from the angular distribution of the emitted radiation with respect to the incident projectile direction. Corrections are made to earlier determinations of the product cross sections for the collisions. The cross sections are resolved into contributions from magnetic substates, and the qualitative behavior of these contributions is discussed.
