Optical Spectrum of Co

Abstract
The polarized absorption of Co has been studied from 0.4 to 2.0 μ. The spectrum consists of sharp magnetic-dipole lines followed on the high-energy side by structure with electric-dipole polarization. The spin-allowed transition in the infrared is found to have magnetic-dipole-polarized magnon sidebands. The spin-forbidden transitions have magnon sidebands with electric-dipole polarization. Sidebands resulting from the simultaneous absorption of optical and low-energy excitons are also observed. The magnetic-field and temperature dependence of the absorption lines are reported.
