Effect of an Electron-Acceptor Gas on the Optical Breakdown of Argon

Abstract

The effect of the addition of CCl2F2 on the optical breakdown threshold of argon is described. It is found that for slowly rising laser pulses, CCl2F2 inhibits breakdown, while for rapidly rising pulses, it enhances breakdown. The results are discussed in relation to existing breakdown theory.
