Theory of Dissociation of H2+ by Fast Electrons

Abstract

Theoretical results for the dissociation of the hydrogen-molecule ion by high-energy electrons are considered with the intention of providing sufficient data for comparison with recent experimental studies of this system. The experimental results and this comparison are given in the preceding paper by Dunn and Van Zyl. The coefficients A and B for the cross-section formula V02Q=AlnV0+B, where V0 is the relative collision velocity, are given for the discrete transitions 1sσg2pσu and 1sσg2pπu for each of the initial H2+ vibrational states in the 1sσg potential curve. Similar data, obtained from a closure argument, are given; an estimate of the remaining contributions to the experimental cross section is then possible.
