Abstract
The matrix element of the equal-time commutator of the axial-vector current and its fourth component between one-nucleon states of the same momentum is investigated on the basis of general principles. The dependence on the pion four-momentum of Adler-Weisberger-type relations for the renormalization of the axial-vector coupling constant is examined. Furthermore, the connection of position space singularities with subtractions in the scattering amplitudes involved is shown.
