Abstract

The Mn55 and Se77 NMR have been observed in the paramagnetic states of the antiferromagnetic compounds MnO, αMnS, and αMnSe. The Mn55 and Se77 NMR frequency shifts were found to be temperature-dependent and proportional to the magnetic susceptibility. From an analysis of the NMR frequency shift and magnetic-susceptibility data, the following hyperfine coupling constants were determined: A55(MnO)=(81.5±2.5)×104 cm1, A55(αMnS)=(71.8±5.3)×104 cm1, A55(αMnSe)=(67.0±4.5)×104 cm1 and A77(αMnSe)=+(7.2±0.6)×104 cm1. Additional information regarding the Néel temperatures of αMnS and αMnSe was obtained by studying the temperature dependence of the Mn55 NMR intensity with the result TN(αMnS)=(147±1)°K and TN(αMnSe)150°K. The experimental Mn55 and Se77 NMR linewidths were found to be in agreement with predictions based upon the theory of exchange-narrowed hyperfine-broadened NMR linewidths in paramagnetic insulators.
