S- and P-Wave Interactions of K− Mesons in Hydrogen

Abstract

The experimental study of low-energy K−-meson interactions in a hydrogen bubble chamber is continued and the energy range extended to a region that involves P waves. Scattering and hyperon-production cross sections are measured at mean K−-meson laboratory momenta of 300 Mev/c and 400 Mev/c. Elasticscattering angular distributions are obtained and, along with the values of the cross sections, indicate the presence of P waves.

Based on 289 observed decays, the measured K−-meson mean lifetime is (1.31±0.08)×10−8 sec.
