APS is now accepting nominations of members, including self-nominations, for the newly restructured role of APS Editor in Chief (EIC).
As reported in the March issue of APS News, and after input from APS members, APS’s elected leaders unanimously approved a new governance structure for APS’s scientific publications intended to strengthen and safeguard the Physical Review journals. In this new structure, the EIC will no longer be a member of APS staff, but rather an appointed member of the Board, with Board-level oversight of APS scientific publications, without managerial responsibilities.
The EIC will be a member of the Board, Council, and Board Executive Committee, appointed by the Board to a three-year term starting January 1, 2023, with specific oversight responsibility for all aspects of APS journals publishing. The EIC will oversee the quality, relevance, scientific integrity and editorial excellence of APS scientific publications, as well as the development and execution of APS’s publishing strategy. As an active although non-voting member of the Board, the EIC will chair and be advised by a restructured Committee on Scientific Publications (CSP), which will report to the Board and Council and include both scientists and publishing professionals. The EIC will be the final adjudicator of author appeals and will work in partnership with the Chief Publications Officer (CPO) to represent APS journals to a broad range of constituencies, including authors and readers of the journals. The CPO will be responsible for the operational leadership and management of all aspects of APS’s publishing.
As a volunteer-driven organization, APS deeply values the input of members like you. The search will remain open until the position is filled, but the Search Committee will begin a review of nominations in mid-September. Please consider nominating another APS member (or yourself) for this appointed position by September 7.
Be sure to nominate APS members you feel have the necessary expertise and interest, provide diverse perspectives, and who support the APS Strategic Plan, and who embrace the Society’s core values. The ideal candidate is an APS member who has a breadth of experience in the publishing enterprise, as well as the respect of the physics community and excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Nominations of women and members of underrepresented minority groups are encouraged. Please also consider candidates from outside the United States, and from the industrial and private sectors.
